Duplicate Content – What and How To Use It
Posted on 28. Mar, 2011 by Mike O'Grady in Blogging
As any internet marketer knows(who spends time reading about the subject), one of the most talked about topics is about whether or not duplicate content is good or bad for your websites ranking. Many people feel that duplicate content can hurt your websites ranking because it will count less then the website that originally posted it.
Others feel that it doesn’t really hurt your websites rankings. In fact having the extra content creates extra pages for your website, thus causing it to appear in search engines. This naturally translates into more traffic to your blog! After all lets take a look at sites like ezinearticles.com and articlesbase.com etc. All of their traffic is based on this.
Many ecommerce sites use the duplicate content to talk about or describe a product and many of these websites still have great page rank. How could that be if duplicate content is such a bad thing to have on your website or blog?
If you ever looked at search results in Google, sometimes you see extra similar links that are not shown unless you click the dropdown to see them. This basically means Google is deciding which link to show you based on originality or who is the most credible website with many links back to their article.
BIG MYTH – Your whole website loses rank for duplicate content
The only negative you may see is only in regards to your individual page ranking, NOT your entire website.
My Case Study
I have done some testing in this area. The fact is some duplicate or similar content can actually help your website GAIN more traffic! Some articles will get read BECAUSE they are similar to other popular articles.
Is it good to use article directory sites to market your website?
Yes of course it is! The small duplicate content penalty is only for YOUR website. When you post your articles on OTHER peoples websites, that is not affecting you. Its only when you are reposting or copying articles to your own website that have been posted on hundreds of other websites.
Conclusion
Its ok to copy some articles without affecting your websites rank. Article directories, ecommerce sites and affiliate marketers republish articles all the time yet they maintain good page rank as well as gain traffic from it.
